Cannot access Windows update page since uninstalling Internet Explorer and re-installing IE8.

Had a virus on my computer (now cleaned).  However it affected Internet Explorer ..so had to uninstall IE and reinstalled IE8 with SP3.  Now cannot access the windows update page.  Get a message that says 'this page cannot be displayed" no matter which
way I try to get updates.  Selected Windows updates from Start menu or typingwww.microsoft.com and trying updates from there.  Checked Nortons Anti-virus and it is checked as Allowed .   Have Win XP Professional
& 2GB free space.
Any help would be appreciated

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan!  You may need to download the MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it.

• Move the mouse cursor over to the upper right side of the screen.
• A menu will pop up on the left. Click on the "Settings" feature on the menu.
• On the Settings window, click on the "Change PC settings."
