This isn't really a problem per se, but a puzzler.
 

I have 3 computers on my wireless network.
 Two running Windows 7, and a third running Windows 8.
 I typically copy files from one Win 7 computer to the other, getting speeds of about 2MB/sec.
 I'll log onto the destination computer and copy files over
the network.

For chuckles and grins, I decided to try and copy files from one Win 7 computer to the other, using my Win 8 as the "controller."  That is, I logged on to shared folders on both Win 7 computers and copied files that way.
 However, my transfer rates were
terrible: 700KB/sec at most.
 I stopped the transfer and tried the same file copy by logging on to the win 7 destination computer, and the rate went back up to 2MB/sec.

I realize with a wireless network there are LOTS of variables to consider.
 But with all things being equal, is there any reason the transfer rate would be so much slower when using a third computer to transfer files between two other computers?  Is it
because the third computer is still acting as a point of transfer between the two Win 7 computers?

That's exactly right.  Data will first be copied from the source to the intermediate computer and then it will copy it to the target.  Depending on the copy program used a certain amount of data will be buffered to memory and then sent on.  In some cases there
may be disk buffering also making it even slower.

  It will always work this way with simple workstations.  There is, in some network operating systems, a command that can be issued to, tell a server to copy data directly to another node on the network.

To check for Windows updates. Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button , clicking All Programs, and then clicking Windows Update. In the left pane, click Check for updates, and then wait while Windows looks for the latest updates for your computer. If any updates are found, click Install updates.

Install the latest updates for Windows and for the program displaying the error. Note that the update for the program might be listed as an optional update on the Windows Update page.

Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button. In the search box, type Update, and then, in the list of results, click Windows Update.
