Cannot find/remove Phantom Link in workbook

I asked about this earlier, and have never been able to resolve the problem, I do however have more information...

I recently pasted a small tab from a template from our parent company into a summary spreadsheet we work on.
 We use excel 2007, however all files are saved in 2003 (.xls) format.
 After pasting the above data into the worksheet, I began getting errors
about 3 websites that could not be updated, it now takes over 10 seconds to open the spreadsheet waiting for those to time out.

I have deleted everything but 1 tab out of the spreadsheet, and all named ranges and macros.
 As long as there is a link from this spreadsheet to another external sheet (any time a single valid link shows up under data > edit links) the errors pop up when
opening the sheet.
 If there are no external links the error does not pop up.
 If I go back and add a link then save, close and re-open the errors are back.
 

I have saved the file as a 2007 format (xlsx) and decompressed it to a folder and searched for the offending links, they show up in files in \xl\externalLinks\_rels.
 Many many other links are also in there, but only these 3 cause the problems.

I have ran the document inspector and removed EVERYTHING, yet the errors still show up.
 Again I have removed all named ranges, macros, objects, all links under edit links and all tabs, deleted all but 1 cell on the remaining workbook and anytime that
I link that 1 cell to an external book and save then re-open the errors are back and I cannot figure out how to get rid of them!

3. Note: this Registry Key should already exist, if it does not exist, create it.
4. Create a brand new DWORD Value that is named AllowOsUpdate
5. Set the Value to 0x00000001.
6. Close and reopen your Control Panel.
7. Restart the Microsoft Windows.
