How Can I Fix - Another question for you Excel Gurus regarding splitting a line of data into various character widths...?

Another question for you Excel Gurus regarding splitting a line of data into various character widths...

I have strings of data 288 characters long.
Each data string needs to be split into various character lengths such as: 1,6,2,2,9,30,15,10,10,9,88,15,2,5,4,4,4,6,11,11,8,1,2,13,13,7.
These are the actual number of characters I need to be able to divide the
288 character line into, and each 'clump' needs to go into a different column (A-Z) (I guess this would be similar to different fields in Access.) Just be be clear, I need the first column A to contain the first character (which just happens to be a '1' in
all lines), the next 6 characters (which are digits) into column B, The following 2 into C & the next 2 (which happen to be alpha characters) into D and so on.
The characters can be digits, alpha characters, and/or spaces; there are no page breaks.
I don't know if there is some way to do this by importing the text file containing the data strings, or if I would need to write some kind of macro that would divy up the individual fields.
You guys always come through for me - and I certainly appreciate all of your time and effort.
Hopefully, this will be a trivial exercise for you brainiacs!!  :-)
Thanks in advance!!

Mike,

If it is in a text file, then open it as you would a normal file (assume it doesn't have a .csv extension).  this will take you to the Text import wizard.  in the dialog choose Fixed width and hit OK.  In the next dialog click where you want the data broken.
when done click next.  If you need special handling for any of the "columns" you have specified, you can do it in this dialog (such as how to handle dates).   then click OK and it should bring in your file.  If you already have the data in your sheet and it
is all in column A, then you can select column A, then go to the data tab in the ribbon and choose Text to columns.  This will bring up the same set of dialogs.

Is that what you are looking for?
