Application window minimizes to syste/notification ar of taskbar - why?

The usual behavior of a minimized application, up to about a week ago, was that the application's icon appeared in the taskbar when I clicked on the "minimize"symbol.
That way, I was assured that it was still running while I did
something else - like lunch or the John, or maybe a short nap.
But when I got the new update of Malwarebytes and started it on a comprehensive scan, and thenattempted to minimize it, the icon did NOT appear on the taskbar.
At first, I thought it had stopped working.
Then I spotted it in the
system/notification area.
Since then, a couple of other applications have taken up residence in that area when minimized, instead of in the main area of the taskbar.
Why is this happening?
And how do I change this behavior so that applications I want to leave running while I do something else have their icons on the taskbar where they belong?
